How Good Christians Can Support Our TroopsJune 22, 2018
As we go about our usual daily activities, it is always important to pause and remember who makes our lifestyle and freedoms possible. Those people are the members of the military, also known as the troops. There are many great ways to support our troops.
Why Support Our Troops?
It’s important for Christians to support the military as a reflection of our appreciation for their service in defending our freedoms. They sacrifice so much as they serve in the military, and the least we can do is show our support to them. It’s equally important for Christians to be patriotic out of gratitude and respect for our wonderful country.
Volunteer at the Local VA
Now that you understand why it’s so important to support our troops, you are probably eager to know how you can help. For one, you can volunteer at your local VA. Contact them to see what types of help they need and when. You might wonder what the VA does, and that’s a great question. It provides essential help for people who have served in the U.S. military to get affordable VA mortgages, higher education, health care, insurance, and much, much more.
Donate to the VA
You can also provide donations to the VA, whether that is a donation of money or something else. For example, the VA collects various donated items such as clothing, toys, household items and more. As you are weeding out and collecting items you no longer need, consider giving them to the VA. The organization will use those donations to fund many of their programs and activities. Find out if there are other local veterans organizations that also need help.
Pen Pals and Care Packages
Being in the military is tough, and it’s so nice to have someone reach out to you in friendship. Caring Christians can become pen pals with members of our military, and it can be a great encouragement for troops to receive notes, letters, and emails. Another way to help is by sending care packages to the troops. Items to consider including are toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, books, magazines and pre-wrapped snacks.
Look After Their Families
If you know that members of your church are the wife, husband, or child of someone serving in the military, reach out to see what you can do to serve them. This is especially important for the families of soldiers in active combat roles. For those who are serving our country in dangerous foreign campaigns, the thought that someone is there to lend a helping hand for his or her family is reassuring.
Most importantly, you can help to support our troops in spiritual ways. In particular, you and your family can commit to praying for our troops. Your church can circulate a list of people in the military who are connected to your church in some way, and everyone can pray for them regularly.
Now that you have some ideas to get you started, take things to the next step by implementing one or more of these ideas. You will be contributing to a deserving cause.
